What is the difference between xfce4 and xubuntu-desktop packages? If you install the xfce4 package, you just get the Xfce desktop and some basic packages included in the Xfce desktop such as Thunar file manager. The rest of the things remain the same. However, if you choose to install the xubuntu-package, it will have Xfce desktop, all the packages in xfce4 and additional packages that are provided by Xubuntu distribution.

The answer depends on your need. But if you want the complete Xubuntu desktop experience as if you were using Xubuntu itself, go for xubuntu-desktop. You can also remove all traces of Unity to convert your Ubuntu install to Xubuntu. There might be conflict as both would use the same Xfce session files.

If you want to try out both, purge the one already installed. At the login screen, click on the user first and then click the gear symbol and select Xfce session to login to use Xfce desktop. You can use the same way to switch back to the default Ubuntu desktop environment by selecting Ubuntu Default. To get the actual Xubuntu experience, you can install xubuntu-desktop package that offers several applications of its own. It will install files of size around MB, an indication that there are more packages here than xfce4.

This process will ask you to choose the display manager as well. I chose gdm3. Any installed icon theme can only be applied to your Xfce Manjaro if it is added to the system icons folder. We completed the stated procedure in the previous section.

You can find various sources that provide custom icon themes on the internet, such as Github , Gnome-look. Explore and select an icon theme according to your preference and then add it to your Xfce Manjaro system by our provided method. Open the extracted directory which contains 4 sub directories. We are interested in the first folder which is called korla. Copy the koral directory by right-clicking on it and selecting copy from the pop-up. If you still have the Thunar file browser themes directory open, then navigate out of themes and switch to icons.

Once there, copy the korla directory to the icons directory. Move the new window so that you can see both file browsers side-by-side.
